When Lieutenant Brian Zach, an officer with the Kingman Police Department, responded to a call in March 2018, he had no idea how his life was about to be changed. As it turns out, the man’s future daughter was going to be waiting for him at the home he went to that day. A patrol sergeant at the time, Zach didn’t know that when the officers responded to a routine residence check, a little girl named Kaila was in serious need of help. Zach said that when he got there, he sat down with the toddler and snacked and colored. In an interview with Good Morning America, he said that she held his hand and was a “cute little thing.”
When the detectives got there, they picked her up and carried her to the hospital, Zach explained. Zach is married and has two children of his own with Cierra, his wife, and this little girl made a big impression on the hardened officer. Cierra told AZ Family in an interview that her husband came home and described what happened, saying that he got to hang out with “the cutest little girl.” He just fell in love with Kaila, and called her “awesome.” She ended up having to be treated for her injuries and her caretakers faced criminal charges. But when the opportunity came up, Zach and Cierra knew what they wanted to do.

They offered to foster Kaila and she came to them with a bag of clothes that didn’t fit her and one sippy cup. That was all she had, Zach said. However, she adapted quickly to her new home and even started calling Cierra and Brian “mom” and “dad” from early on. From the second day, she was calling Cierra “mommy,” but it took her a few more days to start calling Brian “dad.” It’s a huge change for a child to go from one environment to another that quickly.

Zach said that their time with the little girl was precious, and they never knew if she was going to have to go back to her family or if someone would come to claim her. That didn’t happen and they were able to finally adopt the little girl 30 months after meeting her. Watch the video below for more on this story.
