For those who didn’t know (or probably couldn’t care less), Sunday, August 13th was International Left-Handers Day. So in homage to lefties everywhere, we found a list of annoying problems that all left-handers have to put up with daily.
If you’re left-handed, then you’re probably aware that, like it or not, you live in a right-handed world. Things from desks and scissors to ring binders and ice cream scoopers, seem designed with the sole purpose of accommodating righties and ticking you off in the process!
Many people would argue that around 90 percent of the world’s population is right-handed, so it makes sense.
However, there is still an impressive list of lefties throughout history crammed into that remaining elite 10 percent.
A few examples of world-famous lefties include:
- Leonardo Da Vinci
- Michelangelo
- Aristotle
- Julius Caesar
- Albert Einstein
- Neil Armstrong
- Winston Churchill
- Bill Gates
- Jimi Hendrix
- Kurt Cobain
- Paul McCartney
- David Bowie
- Charlie Chaplin
- Robert de Niro
- Angelina Jolie
- Keanu Reeves
- Bruce Willis
- Tom Cruise
- Jon Stewart
- And Barack Obama
Those are just the people we have time to list. The point is that left-handed people have been happing our society since the beginning of humankind.
Despite this, however, non-righties have had a pretty tough lot throughout history. In fact, the word “left” is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word “lyft,” meaning “weak. And another word “sinister” actually comes from the Latin word meaning “left.”
So throughout history, many people believed that left-handers were up to no good. They were thought to consort with the devil, and being left-handed sometimes was considered proof that a woman was a witch which many times lead to her persecution and execution!
Fortunately, those days are long behind us. Now the only things lefties need to worry about are things like using manual can-openers and getting ink all over the side of your hand while trying to write on paper.
