Comedy comes in many different forms, and folks may prefer different styles. Believe it or not, so far, there are around 25 comedy categories such as black comedy, sitcom, sketch, one-line jokes, and even anti-humor (which is an unintentional comedic performance). Often times, comedians would blend any combination of these styles to create something unique. Character comedy derives humor from an invented persona played by a talented performer. Another type of popular comedic art style is cringe comedy, which is a comedy that involves embarrassment caused by awkward actions or words. Great comedians who have managed to marry the two concepts include talents such as Andy Kaufman, Sascha Baron Cohen, Zack Galifianakis, and Rowan Atkinson, the creator of the world-famous “Mr. Bean” character.
Atkinson’s also been known to blend variations of his character into his performances as himself. For instance, he would often conduct hilariously awkward interviews in the style of Galifianakis’ hit internet series “Between Two Ferns” to make for some of the most hilarious, laugh out loud conversations you’ve ever seen. And these types of interviews can’t just be listened to, you’ve got to see the expressions on the other person’s face to genuinely appreciate the humor. One such conversation took place in 1991 at an event called Hysteria 3. In the video, we see Atkinson interviewing Sir. Elton John.
Another comedic form Atkinson uses with mastery is the art of “deadpan” humor. During the interview, he feigns a serious air as though he’s a hardnosed journalist such as Dan Rather, but the questions he puts to Elton are absolutely nuts! For instance, at the beginning of the interview, Atkinson asks Elton John where did he come up with his name. Once the musician explains his name’s origin, Atkinson then asks him if he ever considered calling himself “John Elton.” Rocketman looks at him with a blank “what are you smoking, man?” expression and flatly replies, “No.” Without even a glimmer of a smile, Atkinson asks, “You didn’t?” to which Elton John once again answers, “No.” Atkinson looks down at his clipboard and sighs, “ooookaaay.”
If you’re a fan of Mr. Bean or just good deadpan humor, then you’ll love this interview. You can watch it in the video below.
