Being a game show host is a tough job. Sure, it looks like a lot of fun, but there are so many things happing behind the scenes and in front of the cameras that really make it a much harder job than it appears. First off, the host has to be entertaining, funny, and think quick on their feet. Game show hosts must always have something to say and be able to make dull contestants seem more fun and exciting to their audience. This is much easier said than done as some folks can become robots when they find themselves in front of a TV camera.
Hosts must also be able to deal with the unexpected. If the game show has a technical error, such as a malfunctioning game board, they have to know just how to lighten the mood and fill the time while their crew fixes the problem. This is why a host must be the master of “small talk,” able to draw out segments by merely conversing with the guests in an upbeat fashion. Perhaps the most exceptional game show host of all time was Bob Barker, who could charm the venom out of a snake. However, during the credits of one episode of The Price is Right, Bob had to deal with an unexpected situation.
In this video, we see how Bob handles being smacked in the face by an overly excited contestant as the credits are rolling. Baker plays off the accidental slap well, feigning dizziness and hamming it up for all it’s worth. It’s little things like this that made his game show one of the best on television for over 35 years.
