Bob Barker was arguably America’s most beloved game show host. His Price Is Right show is still a daytime tradition in many households, and his successor, Drew Carrey, is doing a fantastic job. However, many of us still miss Barker’s unique and sharp wit. Barker was once television’s longest-reigning game show host, hosting Price Is Right from its inception in 1972 to 2007 when he retired from the show (which is currently the longest-running game show in TV history). Before the Price is Right, he started hosting his first game show, Truth or Consequences, back in 1956 until 1974. And before that, he had a very successful career on radio, both in Florida as a news editor and announcer and in California hosting “The Bob Barker Show, which he ran for six years.
Now, a lot of folks think that Bob Barker had only been in one movie, the 1996 hit Adam Sandler comedy “Happy Gilmore,” but technically, that was his second movie. You see, in 1979, he had the lead role in a TV movie called “Overlanders.” The plot was set in the Canadian northwest back in 1862 and involved nine men, a pregnant woman, and a young boy who set out on an odyssey in search of gold. However, after disaster strikes, the group finds themselves without a leader and must find a way to survive the harsh, unforgiving wilderness. Sounds pretty good, right? However, I think most of us would agree that Barker’s role as himself in Happy Gilmore was one of the all-time funniest fight scenes in movie history.
In the movie, Happy Gilmore (a former amateur hockey player) decides to try his hand at professional golf. Early on, he teams up with Barker for a golf tournament, and let’s just say the two didn’t’ get off on the best of terms, as Gilmore was having a horrendous game due in part being tormented by a heckler. Tensions start to build between Barker and Gilmore as they continued to slide down the tournament rankings all the way to the last place slot. But, when Barker tells Gilmore, “There’s no way you could have been as bad at hockey as you are at golf,” the former hockey player loses it and decks him. That’s when Bob Barker goes into “It’s time to pay the price” mode and opens up a can of…well, you get the idea.
