Most of us “city slickers” don’t have a lot of experience coming across wild animals outside of a zoo. I can still remember the sheer horror I felt the first time I stumbled across a skunk. But it’s not all bad. Seeing creatures like deer or rabbits in the wild for the first time is quite a treat. One of my favorite animals to look for on our farm is road runners; of course, they look nothing like in the cartoon, but those little buggers are pretty fast, and they climb trees like champs. Another city slicker who wasn’t used to seeing wild creatures is comedian Kevin Hart.
One day back in 2018, Hart was a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. And, he was joined by another guest, Robert Irwin, the son of the late wildlife conservationist Steve “The Crocodile Hunter” Irwin. On the show, Robert spoke about the importance of wildlife conservation, but also brought a couple of his wildlife friends. When Robert introduced his first “cute and cuddly” animal, a baby ostrich named Gizelle, Hart, was up and out of his seat before you could blink! Of course, Hart would not dare venture more than six feet closer to the baby bird as he noted that Oschrich’s chirping noises translated to “I want some little black man.”
But, if Hart thought the baby ostrich was terrifying, he was in for a real treat because next Robert introduced “Lebron,” who he described as “absolutely awesome.” The teenager reached behind the couch and pulled out a large tan and brown striped snake. As Jimmy and Robert tried to coax the comedian to come over and hold the snake, Hart’s feet didn’t move a single centimeter toward the stage, informing them both that “it’s not going to happen!” Eventually, they almost talked him into holding Lebron, but Hart chickened out at the last second. However, their final creature was the dealbreaker, as Robert pulled out his “favorite animal,” which was a large tarantula named “Big Red.” At this point, Hart was nearly out of the studio. However, Fallon decided to try holding the spider and promptly freaked out as soon as his hairy legs touched his hands!
