It’s still weird to hear kids today refer to the ’90s as “retro.” However, it is funny to see the look on their faces when they see the type of clothes and hairstyles we wore back in those days. Like every generation, teens in the ’90s believed we were on the “cutting edge” of everything. We even used words like “radical” to express the “awesomeness” of generational superiority. Why we even had mind-blowing technology like Discmans that played music CDs, unlike those old fashioned ’80s walkmans that played cassette tapes. While VCRs were still in use, we were the generation who were introduced to DVDs. And when it came to phones, we had beepers and flip phones!
One of my favorite shows that represented all things ’90s was the sitcom “Saved by the Bell.” Every week, I would tune in to see what shenanigans Zach, Slater, Screech, Kelly, and Lisa (a.k.a the love of my life) were getting into. The theme of the show wasn’t exactly original, it certainly reminded me of movies like Ferris Buller’s Day Off, with Zach’s character being the “too cool for school” mischief-maker. But, the show mainly focused on the school setting instead of going too deep into their family life, which really gave it a more realistic high school vibe. The show even ran for only four years. Over the years, they tried and failed to reproduce the magic with various Saved by the Bell spin-offs, but nothing ever came close to the original. And in this 2015, video Jimmy Fallon brings back most of the original cast for a hilarious flashback skit.
The video opens with Fallon reminiscing about his high school days. As the dreamy “remember when” harp tune plays, we see a “young” Jimmy Fallon wearing acid-washed jeans, a blue and white striped shirt, and a long purple shirt (cuffed, cuffed of course). And I won’t even get into the monstrosities on his feet! Now, folks here’s what really gets me about this video, just about every single one of the original Saved By the Bell cast members, save for Mr. Belding, looks like they had hardly aged a day! It’s absolutely crazy! — or some absolutely really fantastic makeup.
If you’re a fan of this ’90s TV treasure, then you’ll love watching this hilarious “retro” skit. It’s all that and a bag of chips!
