Catchphrases have been around since the beginning of human language. These are often phrases that stick into our minds when we think of someone. Before the age of cinema, catchphrases were famous quotes from sources such as books, plays, and historical figures. For example, when you think of the phrase, “To be or not to be,” Shakespeare and Hamlet may immediately jump into your mind. The first U.S president, George Washington, is often thought of when we hear the phrase, “I cannot tell a lie.” However, history shows that he probably never said it, and the whole cherry tree story likely a work of fiction.
And when it comes to TV shows and movies, catchphrases are a massive part of our entertainment culture. I mean, come on? What would Happy Days be without the Fonz saying “Heeeeey,” or the Simpsons without Homer saying “D’oh” a couple of times per episode? There’s just something so comforting and familiar about hearing our favorite catchphrases at the end of a long workday that’s sort-of soothing. In a way, they almost make these fictional characters we see on TV feel almost like family after a few years. We get to know all their habits and ticks, and when we meet the actors, it almost feels like we kind of know them (which we don’t). In this video, we see Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake doing Saturday Night Live’s “Cold Open,” with a musical number featuring some of the show’s most iconic catchphrases.
The video begins with Jimmy standing alone in the spotlight as he grabs his hat and spins around, ready to start a musical number. However, Justin soon steps in front of him to address the crowd, welcoming them to SNL’s 40th-anniversary special. The two then begin naming some of the most beloved characters, sketches, and catchphrases on the show before going into a hilarious rap performance using dozens of SNL’s most iconic catchphrases.
