One of the best sitcoms in TV history was the Brady Bunch, which premiered in 1969 and aired until 1974. Sherwood Schwartz (creator of Gilligan’s Island) had shopped the idea of the show around to the “big three” networks of that time NBC, ABC, and CBS, but they all wanted to change the show so drastically, that he decided to shelf it for a while. ABC changed their minds after the success of a 1968 movie with a similar theme called “Yours, Mine, and Ours” starring Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball. At the time, the premise of the show was a bit controversial as originally, the show’s creator, wanted the wife to be a divorcee.
However, producers pushed back against this idea, and so the creators compromised by leaving the reason for her previous status as a single mom up to the imagination of the viewer. The plot of the show was pretty simple, Mike Brady (played by Robert Reed) falls in love with Carol Martin (played by Florence Henderson), and they both decided to get married. Both have three children from their previous marriages; Mike’s kids were Peter (Christopher Knight), Bobby (Mike Lookinland), and Greg (Barry Williams. Carol’s had three daughters named Jan (Eve Plumb), Marcia (Maureen McCormick), and Cindy (Susan Olsen). Cindy and her girls eventually move in with Greg, his boys, and his live-in housekeeper Alice Nelson (Ann B. Davis). One of the things that makes this show so memorable is its iconic theme song, which in music industry terms is super “sticky.” Back in 2007, Jamie Foxx performed his unique interpretation of the Brady Bunch theme song during a live performance.
As Foxx plays the piano, he tells the story of how when he was growing up, his family was very religious, so when he would have a girl over, he couldn’t play any romantic songs. He was only allowed to play spiritual songs or songs from TV shows. With spiritual songs out of the question, a teenage Foxx found ways to make TV theme songs sound sexy. He then gives everyone an example by singing a slow and seductive version of The Brady Bunch theme song.
