Breaking through in the entertainment business can take a lifetime of dedication and a great deal of luck. Along the way, artists must deal with tons of rejection along with perhaps some unprofessional behavior (especially women) while navigating complicated social networks within the industry. Often, we hear about entertainers who had worked their way up from relatively minor roles to become major stars. One such celebrity is Jennifer Lopez (also known as J-Lo), who began her career in the entertainment industry as a “Fly Girl,” which was a background dancer on the hit ’90s sketch comedy show “In Living Color.” Like many teens, Lopez grew up wanting to become a “famous movie star.”
However, her family did not encourage her dream, insisting that it was a “really stupid” plan and that “no Latinos did that.” Such profound differences lead to Lopez moving out of her family home and into a Manhattan apartment. During this time, she would perform in regional musical productions such as Oklahoma! And Jesus Christ Superstar. During the early part of her career, Lopez endured many highs and lows, taking small roles here and there while continually honing her skills as an actress. Today, she’s not only an Oscar-winning actress, but she’s also Grammy-nominated singer, producer, fashion designer and businesswoman with an estimated net worth of at least $400 million.
