Anyone who’s worked in customer service, be it retail or the service industry, knows that customers can ask some pretty dumb questions. Many folks who work in the restaurant business can attest to this. Sometimes customers can waste a server’s time, which is why one restaurant decided to start charging customers for nonsense questions.
Welcome to Tom’s Diner
Tom’s Diner in Denver, Colorado, is a family-owned business that’s become a local landmark. This 24-7 diner opened in 1999 and has become a destination for locals and tourists looking for a good old-fashioned American diner experience with a twist.
Stupid Questions Answered for a Price
At Tom’s, part of the restaurant’s theme is encouraging customers to behave silly by posing “stupid questions” to their wait staff. It’s all in good fun and for .38 cents a question, a pretty cheap way to enjoy the look of confusion and annoyance on a server’s face.
A Reddit user came across this hidden gem and was shocked when they were charged for asking a stupid question. It did not take long before the post went viral.
Tom’s Diner isn’t like other establishments where the wait staff insult guests as part of the experience. Instead, their humor’s a bit more tongue in cheek, allowing customers to have a good time while thinking up as many silly questions as they’re willing to pay for.
According to the restaurant’s general manager, Hunter Landry:
“It’s meant to be playful. It’s good to keep things light in today’s world. When we have a good fun table that engages with us or when they ask about the charge, it’s always fun to add it on. ”
All in the Family
Hunter is Tom Messina’s nephew, Tom’s Diner’s owner. He says Tom added this interesting menu item to inject some fun into the customer’s experience.
It’s also fun for his staff, who constantly have to be on their toes for some pretty off-the-wall questions.
Along with the “stupid question,” the dinner added, “Skip your next meal” to the menu for those looking for the restaurant’s healthiest option. The price was “money saved” while taking a “walk home” was priceless.
According to Tom’s employees, the menus encourage customers to ask funny questions like “Are there any dues fo the turkey club sandwich?” and “Does ice have water in it?”
Tom’s Diner had to close down in 2020 during the pandemic, but the good news is that it’s scheduled to return in 2022, rebranded as Tom’s Starlight Cocktail Lounge.
