When I was growing up, my mother always had some advice for me and it is advice that I’ve tried to live my life by since that time. It was a very simple statement, and I’m sure that many of you have heard it from your mother and from others as well. She would say, “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” Of course, I was never perfect when it came to following that advice and there were times when I just had to speak up because the temptation was too great to say something.
I’m sure that we all recognize that some people will follow that advice to the letter but other people will do what they can to get a good laugh at someone else’s expense. It can be very funny to watch, especially if we are not directly involved on one side or the other. Perhaps that is why that show was so popular. It involved roasting someone, typically a celebrity, who was popular. It gave somebody the opportunity to say everything that was on their mind and to do all that they could to tear a person down. Of course, it was all in good fun and you can tell by the laughter of the person being ‘roasted’ that they had no problem with it taking place.
Dean Martin was the host of the celebrity roast and there was always something funny on the menu. In the video that you see below, Don Rickles is doing his best to roast Bob Hope, who was the ‘man of the hour’. The clip may be decades old, but it is still as funny today as it ever was in the past.
You can tell by the laughter from Dean Martin that he is absolutely loving what Don Rickles is saying. Everyone else on the platform is also laughing, including Bob Hope.
