Believe it or not, are among some of the most well-conditioned athletes in the world. While it may seem like they just do a lot of prancing and twirling, these folks are actually incredibly strong and fit athletes performing moves that would land most folks in the hospital. In fact, a 2008 study found that ballet dancers are more fit than even Olympic-level swimmers! You heard, right. Ballet dancers have better overall fitness than the athletes participating in one of the most physically demanding Olympic contests. However, most folks are under the misconception that this art is mainly just a female form of dancing.
This is not true, there are men who participate in ballet, but they are referred to as ballerinos, not ballerinas. These men, typically serve supporting roles for ballerina’s much the same way male cheerleaders do for female cheerleaders. However, they also do solo and group performances together as well. Back in 2019, Good Morning America host, Lara Spencer, got into a lot of hot water after joking about how then-six-year-old Prince George was taking ballet lessons and how he was reportedly very excited about the class. The incident highlights the prevailing attitude even among some very open-minded folks about men’s role in ballet and the art’s impact on the masculinity. In this video, we see a group of ballerinos having a bit of fun doing a light routine designed for humor.
Not all ballet is stiff, formal, and rigid. Like most folks, ballerinas and ballerinos like to have some fun from time to time, and it looks like these amateur ballerinos are having a blast while showing everyone that ballet isn’t as easy as it looks!
