TV and movie bloopers are the legit best. It’s so much fun watching our favorite stars fumbling over words and getting tongue-tied just like we do. One actor who isn’t famous, however, may have one of the most famous bloopers of all time. A couple who have been married for 53 years did a commercial for Dysart’s Restaurant in Bangor, Maine, and went absolutely viral because, for the life of him, he could not manage to say “baked in a buttery flaky crust.” Jack and Sonya Palmer were the good-natured actors who were filming the commercial. Hilariously, Sonya grows increasingly impatient as she watches her husband struggle. But it wasn’t just Jack who was having trouble. After several takes, Sonya gave it a go and tried to say it, and she couldn’t get the words out, either. No one laughed harder than the crew, except maybe Jack. Sonya just said “…Jack, go outdoors.”
This commercial got so much press that it was actually spoofed by Saturday Night Live by Will Farrell and Kate McKinnon. The actors dressed up just like the older couple and kept the jargon pretty close to the original. However, you can just imagine that riot it was with those two comedians doing this commercial. The funny thing is that Jack and Sonya had no idea about the SNL skit until they showed up to breakfast at Dysart’s on Sunday morning for their regular breakfast. A news team in Maine was able to watch the skit with the Palmers and catch their reactions. Sonya said that she felt McKinnon looks older than her, and Jack said that they did fantastic, “especially with what they had to work with.”
As one YouTuber said, the bloopers have given Dysart’s more advertising than getting “baked in a buttery flaky crust” right ever would have.
