Friendships are funny things sometimes. We develop them all throughout our lives, but most of them seem to melt like cotton candy as years go on. However, sometimes we get lucky enough to find at least one lifelong friend to share our good times and bad times. And that’s very rare because most folks only want to hang out when things are good. So often we hear stories about famous athletes, actors, and musicians who had a million friends when they were on top, but as soon as their fortunes took a turn for the worse, they looked around to find that few if any stayed by their side.
During the late ’80s and ’90s, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover were the kings of the box office with their blockbuster action/comedy Lethal Weapon movies. The movies featured two LAPD detectives, the cautious older veteran Roger Murtaugh (played by glover) and the wild and impulsive former Green Beret Martin Riggs (played by Gibson). Riggs had become suicidal since the death of his wife and became prone to reckless behavior, whereas Murtaugh was looking forward to retirement and wanted to take things nice and easy. Needless to say, he found his partnership with Riggs to be anything but that. The two always butted heads, but over time developed an unbreakable bond built on mutual respect, love, and friendship. And by the end of the first film, Rigg’s new partner and beautiful family gave him a new reason to live. When Lethal Weapon 3 was released in 1992, Sting, Eric Claton, David Sanborn, and Michael Kamen wrote a brilliant song called “It’s Probably Me,” talking about Murtaugh and Riggs’ unique friendship. In this video, we see Grammy Award-winning jazz artist Gregory Porter performing a cover of the song at the Polar Prize Music Ceremony in 2017.

Sting, Clapton, and Kamen were all nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television at the 35th Annual Grammy Awards in 1993. And while the song wasn’t exactly a blockbuster on the American billboard music charts, ranking 47 in the adult contemporary category, it did reach number one in Italy.
