When it comes to motivation, we are all familiar with the usual suspects of “inspirational poster” cliches that plague breakrooms across America. “Pressure forms diamonds,” “Never give up,” and “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars,” all sound like perfectly reasonable advice. But, when the pressure’s on, and you’re in the thick of it, all of those pretty words are nowhere to be found, sort of like a tough-talking friend who mysteriously disappears when that group of bullies shows up to rumble. Self-confidence isn’t an easy thing to summon when you’re painfully aware of everything you have to lose within a stressful moment.
In this video, we meet a 22-year-old young man from a small island community in Northern Wales named Gruffydd Wyn. When he walks out onto the Britan’s Got Talent stage, Wyn reveals that he lives at home with his nan (grandmother). When Simon asks why he still lives at home, Wyn becomes very nervous and emotional as he explains that he didn’t know his father until he was 16. Once Simon gives him the go-ahead to begin singing, Wyn starts out with the Italian opera song Un Giorno Per Noi. However, about halfway through the song, Simon gives the production crew a signal to stop the music.
It’s then when Cowell does something he had probably never done before. He observes that Wyn seemed very nervous and that his singing came off as mechanical and cold. Typically, that’s when Cowell would say something like, “Thank you, better luck next time.” But, instead, he asks if Wyn has anything else he could sing. The young man replies that he does and offers to sing Nessun Dorma by Puccini. After taking a sip of water and a small breather, the young man begins to sing, and immediately you hear the difference as he pours his heart and soul into the lyrics culminating into the song’s dramatic final high note. It is after this that Wyn receives a standing ovation and when judge Amanda Holden enthusiastically hits her golden buzzer to send Wyn to the finals!
