Shows like “The Voice” and “American Idol” are extremely popular in part because we love discovering new talent. However, when watching these shows, we also get to see unscripted performances by established artists and also get to know them a bit behind the scenes. During the 2013 finale of “The Voice,” fans got to enjoy a rare event: two of the most talented songstresses alive today, Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera. Lady Gaga had suffered some fallback earlier that year because she agreed to do a duet of “Do What U Want” with the disgraced R. Kelly, who was under fire for his sex crimes with minors. He was, appropriately, someone that most artists wouldn’t be caught dead with.
Perhaps it was for this reason that Lady Gaga, who is usually so careful with her career, made the ill-advised decision to sing with him at the American Music Awards. Lady Gaga has built her entire career around being edgy. However, that decision was a risk that she should have skipped. When it came time for her to perform on the finale for “The Voice,” she took a safer route and brought in Christina Aguilera for the duet of “Do What U Want.” It was sheer brilliance and ended up being a performance for the ages. These two spectacular divas stunned in complimentary champagne latex outfits, with Lady Gaga in a jumpsuit and Christina in a sultry dress of the same exact color and fabric. Lady Gaga’s outfit had those massive shoulder pads she loves to wear, and both of the ladies wore retro blonde wigs.

From the first notes of their performance, they were both twirling their sleeves, with Lady Gaga doing almost an interpretive dance as Christina sang. When these two glamourous women sang “Do What U Want” together, it was pure class, a far cry from Lady Gaga’s duet with R. Kelly. It almost seemed creepy with R. Kelly singing this song, but these ladies gave it a whole different meaning.
When you watch the video below, it’s obvious that these ladies are having a good time together. Christina even said so on her Instagram, where she described their epic performance as “a reminder of women sticking together.” She pointed out that two women took ownership of a great song. As a survivor of sexual predators, Christina was the best choice imaginable for this performance.
