Kelly Clarkson Sings Amazing Cover of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s ‘Shallow’

The incomparable Lady Gaga wrote the song “Shallow” for the romantic musical “A Star Is Born,” in which she starred with actor Bradley Cooper. “Shallow” is the lead single from the movie’s soundtrack and was written by Lady Gaga with Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt, and Mark Ronson. During the film, the song is heard three times. The most prominent performance of the song is between Gaga and Cooper, when his character calls Gaga’s character onstage to perform the song with him. In the movie, that performance is a pivotal moment because it speaks to the conversations between Gaga’s character and Cooper’s character. The lyrics are self-aware and are asking each other if they’re OK with being who they are.

“Shallow” is considered to be a rock power ballad, and some critics have expressed hope that this song can actually revive the genre of rock power ballads. The song was nominated for an Academy Award and won as the Best Original Song. In addition to the Academy Award, “Shallow” won the 2018 Hollywood Music in Media Awards for Best Original Song in 2018, Best Original Song at the 23rd Satellite Awards, and even a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Additionally, “Shallow” has received two Grammy awards. All total, “Shallow” has earned more than 40 awards, making it the most awarded song of all time.

In the video below, Kelly Clarkson begins by saying that there’s a lot of backbiting in the music industry, but there are also a lot of folks who really just dig each other. She describes this “chick” who is amazing and, while really different from Kelly herself, loves music, and loves what she’s doing. Kelly goes on to explain that she and the artist (whose name she hasn’t mentioned yet) did a gig together once. She says that the woman she’s describing is the only person who has ever written her a hand-written note thanking her, telling her it was an honor opening for her. Kelly describes her as the nicest human being imaginable. The woman? Lady Gaga.

Kelly belts out “Shallow” below, doing her version of it, as she says. She said, “I hope I don’t suck, and if I do, I hope she doesn’t see it.” Watch Kelly slay “Shallow” below. Kelly’s very humble, but she delivers this every bit, as well as Lady Gaga, does.
