Duffy Delivers a Classy and Soulful Live Performance as She Sings Hit Song ‘Mercy’

Over the last 60 or so years, the intriguing rise of British soul singers, commonly referred to as the British soul invasion, has both baffled and delighted American fans. It turns out that American soul music was trendy among many of the U.K’s youth subcultures, such as the northern soul movement, mods, and skinheads (not to be confused with Neo-Nazis). The Soul movement would gain more popularity in the 1970s thanks to such stars as Elton John and The Bee Gees. Although their music isn’t considered soul strictly, many artists from the U.K had begun adopting certain inflections in their voice and style of music inspired by American soul music.

Today, we look at artists such as Amy Winehouse, Adele, Joss Stone, and Leona Lewis as the leaders of the new British Soul Invasion, with Winehouse and Adele as two standout Grammy Award-winning superstars. However, the singer known as Duffy was also a celebrated soul singer from that era of music. In 2009, her album “Rockferry” won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album out of three nominations. It also won three out of four Brit Awards for Best British Album, Best British Female, and British Breakthrough. However, the singer would end up taking a break from music after 2011. In this video, we see Duffy’s 2008 performance of a song called “Mercy.”
