In the animal kingdom, just as in the human world, there are do’s and don’t’s. And one of the biggest “don’t’s” is messing with another animal’s children in front of the mother. It almost doesn’t matter what species, a mother is likely to defend her offspring with everything she’s got. And whenever we think of protective mothers, one of two animals usually come to mind — a mother grizzly bear and a lioness. In the case of a lioness, she will go to great lengths to protect her cubs, even to the point of fighting a much larger male lion (which in many cases could be the cub’s own father).
There was a famous story published a few years back about a male lion meeting his cubs for the first time. The images were heartwarming, but what made this such a big deal was the fact that the lioness did not let the father see his cubs until they were seven months old. She wouldn’t let him anywhere near them until she was sure it would be safe, and even during the adorable meeting, she was in the background keeping a watchful eye on him. In this video, self-taught “Lion Whisperer” and Zookeeper, Kevin Richardson boldly picks up a lion cub right in front of its mother. Something in the animal kingdom about as safe as flossing an alligator’s teeth.
But this isn’t just some random lioness, Kevin has fed, lived with, and even taken a couple of naps with all his lions. The Lioness completely trusts Kevin and considers him like one of her own. You can clearly see their incredible bond as she rubs against him and even bathes him like he was another big cat.
