Don’t Ignore A Service Dog If They Come To You Without Their Owner

There has been a lot of information about service dogs in the news recently. It seems as if the debate over whether a dog is a service dog or not has gained a lot of attention. Sometimes it takes away from the real issue, which is the amazing job that these dogs do for those who need their assistance. That is clearly seen in what Melissa Hope posted on Twitter. It was a PSA that everyone should pay attention to.

Melissa fell down on the ground and her service dog did something that most of us might find unusual. She wasn’t having any serious problems, other than the fact that she was not standing any longer. Her dog was supposed to find help if she had a seizure and he thought she had one. Before she could do anything, the dog scooted away and went to find some help. Melissa posted the PSA about service dogs on the Internet and what you should do if they approach you without their owner.

In the PSA, she talks about her situation and why service dogs need to be taken seriously.

“Don’t get scared, don’t get annoyed, follow the dog! If it had been an emergency situation, I could have vomited and choked, I could have hit my head, I could have had so many things happen to me,” Melissa wrote.

Many people were talking about her PSA on social media. They were encouraging others to learn about service dogs and some even had their own stories to share.

Even local pet associations chimed in and supported her in her efforts.

Most service dogs, if not all of them will have a uniform. It is typically a vest with bright colors. If you see such a dog without their owner they are probably looking for help because that is what they are trained to do.

The PSA was straightforward but it was a helpful wake up call to many. Most people who saw it didn’t realize that a service dog would approach you alone to let you know that their owner was in danger.

We can’t imagine why somebody would brush off a dog but it’s nice to be informed.
