Cow Gives Birth To Quadruplets

Most of us probably wonder what life is like living on a farm. Of course, the traditional farm from a number of years ago is not quite the same as what is experienced today, but there is still a lot to be said about living in the outdoors off of the land. Perhaps that is why Deb and Chuck Beldo live on their Minnesota farm. They had the opportunity to raise animals, to take care of the land and to see many wonderful things along the way.

One of the things that farmers get to enjoy in many cases is seeing the birth of a young animal. They may raise cows for a wide variety of reasons but when a calf is born, it really is a wonderful experience. That was what happened when this couple saw that their cow, Momma Moo, was about ready to give birth. They were ready to welcome the new calf and treated it in a very kind way but when they saw what was happening, they were absolutely floored. They had no idea that the birth would make the history books.

This family first took over farming in 1882 and they have lived on the land for generations. They do their best to make a good living and they have endured farming, both the good and the bad, for decades. When it came time for the family farm to be passed on to Chuck and Deb, they welcomed the opportunity with joy.

Most of us would readily admit that farming is not going to be an easy work, but they were ready for the challenge. This would include helping cows whenever they were pregnant and preparing to give birth. When Momma Moo reached that point, they noticed that she was getting a little bigger than most of the pregnant cows they had seen up until this time. Deb had the following to say:

“Mom had noticed she was large but didn’t think too much of it. Twins are fairly common. Actually, they had a set of twins born earlier this year, but unfortunately, they came during the crazy cold weather we had in April and they didn’t make it.”

When the cow began to give birth, however, they were amazed at how many calves were born.

It wasn’t twins, it was quadruplets! They were welcomed to the world and to their new home on the farm. Chuck and Deb began the work of caring for the animals and helping them to make it through. Everybody was surprised with exactly how strong these newborn calves were.

Not only did they make it through the first night, they are still going quite well today. It is a very rare thing for cows to have more than two calves at a time and having four is unheard of. In fact, the odds are said to be about one in 11.2 million.
