We often hear bad news and we live in a world that lends itself to that possibility. Perhaps some of the saddest news that we hear is in regards to extinct species. They are disappearing so quickly and some of them are on the brink of disappearing and it can really make us choke up when we realize that we will never see those animals again. Every once in a while, however, we hear good news about a species that is endangered, and that is the case with the pink dolphin.
Pinky has been spotted in the Calcasieu River in Louisiana. This wonderful animal has been there for quite some time and became popular almost 12 years ago. It was then that news about her came from Captain Erik Rue, who was the first to see her in the water. A video of Pinky has now been posted to her official Facebook page and she isn’t alone. She has a newborn baby and they were swimming in the Calcasieu Ship Channel in front of a large boat.
Experts say that Pinky is a type of dolphin that is very rare. The pink skin color occurs due to a genetic mutation. River dolphins are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. As you might imagine, pink River dolphins are even fewer in numbers.
Now that Pinky has a new calf, there is hope that she has inherited the genetic mutation that could help this particular species to continue.
As Captain Rue explains, she is completely pink from the tail to the tip and her eyes are red. She doesn’t seem to be affected by the sunlight but typically, she stays under the surface of the waters.
