‘Supermom’ Mother Duck Is Seen In The Water With 76 Ducklings In Tow

Any type of animal is going to be adorable but when it comes to tiny, baby animals, they just have a nature that is sure to touch your heart. They may even look like the adult version that they will soon be but at that point in their lives, they are just a cute tiny version of the eventual reality. Almost any baby animal is going to touch your heart but little ducklings seem to hold a special place in the hearts of many.

Have you ever seen a mother duckling with a line of baby ducklings in tow on the water? It seems as if they are just super calm on the surface but if you were to look under the water, you would see that their little feet were paddling like crazy. Anywhere that the mother duck goes, she will be followed by her little ones and they stay as close as possible to keep safe. It is not out of the ordinary to see 6 to 10 of those ducklings behind a mother duck but this gathering of ducklings is off the charts.

Brent Cizek has a real passion for animals and as a wildlife photographer, he loves getting close and taking as many pictures as he can. When he was out during summer on a Minnesota lake, he saw something that really took him by surprise and now they are calling this mother duck ‘supermom’.

“Well, it wasn’t the greatest idea as it was quite windy that day and the waves were tossing my boat around in any direction that it wanted to,” Cizek said.

“I decided to carry on, knowing that it wasn’t likely that I would see anything, much less be able to take a photograph with the choppy water.”

That is when he saw a Common Merganser duck mother with a row of ducklings behind her.

“The closer that I got, the more my heart started racing as I had never witnessed something like this before,” he said.

“I knew that this was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity, so I immediately tried to fire off as many shots as I could, just hoping that one of the photos would turn out.”

“I was able to then count 76 babies with her,” he said. “So she had picked up more babies along the way. It’s been remarkable. It’s going to be a sad day when they continue their migration.”

According to scientists, this is not out of the question for Mergansers but it is noteworthy that not all of the ducklings would be related to her. You can consider it to be somewhat like a daycare system. That is quite a responsibility, to care for 76 little ones!

Maybe she could open a duck daycare of her own.
