It seemed like the perfect heist.
Rather than doing what the other raccoons were doing, like say go dumpster diving in hopes of finding leftover treats, this enterprising Procyonidae decided instead to go straight for the jackpot.
But as you can see, things didn’t exactly work out according to plan.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office in Florida received a call about the masked bandit after he managed to sneak his way into a vending machine at a local high school.
It turns out. However, the swinging flat through which the clever raccoon entered did not provide such an easy escape route. In other words, he was trapped — allowing authorities to catch the naughty critter red-handed.
Fortunately for the raccoon, deputies decided to let the embarrassing criminal mastermind off with just a warning, escorting him back outside with care.
“What they did was put the vending machine on a dolly and wheel it to the back of the school,” Andrew Gant, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, told The Dodo. “Then they opened the door and the raccoon ran to freedom on his own. They didn’t want to freak him out.”
It’s still unclear how many snacks this little guy may have consumed before he realized that his delicious plans had gone awry, but this crime has definitely endeared his kind to the local authorities.
“I love raccoons,” Gant said.
Check out the moment this little guy was freed from his candy prison in the video below, and be sure to share this funny story with your friends and family.
