Photos of a Baby Koala Clinging to His Mother While She Has Surgery Go Viral

Human beings are capable of profound love and compassion, but we’re not the only species on the planet who are that way. Time and again, we see other creatures on Planet Earth show that the bond between a mother and her child are very moving regardless of the species. In fact, a series of heartfelt and touching photos went viral when they were shared by a comedian named Marty Fields. Although known for his comedic skill, Fields is also an animal lover. When he shared the photos of a mother koala, who was given the name of “Lizzy,” and her baby, the photos quickly went viral for all of the best reasons.

As the photos got shared far and wide, people all over the world have marveled at the love that the baby koala, who has been adorably named “Phantom,” has for his mama. Lizzy had been hit by a vehicle while she was crossing the road and she suffered facial damage and a collapsed lung, which required emergency surgery. Luckily, Phantom was unharmed by the vehicle, but he was terrified about being separated from his mother. When the veterinary staff tried to pull him away, he screamed so much that they let him stay. One thing is that Phantom is only about six months old, and at that age, a koala is still nursing.

Baby koalas don’t leave their mother’s pouches until they’re close to a year old. At any rate, Phantom wasn’t letting his mother out of his sight for even a minute. Through her entire surgery, Phantom stayed right there with her, still looking afraid but feeling safe because he was with his mother. Lizzy survived and recovered well, with Phantom right there with her every minute.

The surgery was performed at the same animal hospital that was founded by the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin and his wife Terri, who founded the Wildlife Warriors hospital and zoo in 2002.
