What would you do if you were in the woods and came across pack of wolves? More than likely, you would be nervous, to say the least. It is very rare for humans and wolves to get along with each other, and there are very few people who share a close, personal bond with those majestic animals. Then again, those who have the opportunity to do so can be considered fortunate and that is the case with a woman named Danielle.
Danielle is a wildlife worker at Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center. She happens to be one of those individuals that have a close bond with wolves and we are just a little bit jealous. It took some time but she was able to earn their respect and trust and those Timberwolves are a part of this video that you are about to watch. They just seem to love what she gives them in the way of attention.
Kekoa is the name of the large gray wolf that is walking alongside Daniela at the beginning of the video. He’s a nine-year-old Timberwolf who was taken to the Center from the Seacrest Wolf Preserve in Florida. His sister, Sakara is also seen in the video and she lives in Colorado with her brother. It seems as if Kekoa loves giving kisses.
You can easily see that Danielle knows how to handle these animals and they have a tight bond with each other. The wolves are wagging their tails and when he sits down next to her, he is submissive and nuzzles with her. He then begins to lick her face which may seem disgusting, but it’s a sign of affection.
Even though he looks quite noble, he really is nothing more than a baby. At 115 pounds, and 7 feet tall when he stands on this hindlegs, he is quite enormous. You can see the size difference between the two of them and his sister, who was slightly smaller at 85 pounds is still quite large.
Perhaps the best part of the video is when he rolls over on his back and exposes his underbelly. He wants a belly rub and it shows that he really trusts her. Kekoa shows a lot of vulnerability around Danielle.
Michelle Smith, the staffer at the wildlife center had the following to say: “Since he was raised by people and bottle fed from the time he was born, he is very well socialized, meaning he enjoys the company of people. This is not the same as domesticated or tame. He is still a ‘wild’ animal, and he does tend to show it when he is around his sister. A wolf in the wild would not act this way.”
To emphasize this fact, she said that a wolf in the wild would never let you pet them in this way. They will avoid human contact and prefer to live on their own.
This video just shows how animals and humans can get along when they have the opportunity to do so. Wolves are not evil, they are personable and beautiful animals. In fact, they are perhaps among the most social and intelligent animals on earth. They have been given a reputation that is not deserved and have been hunted and persecuted close to extinction.
