Those who volunteer as a dog adoption and foster coordinator see some incredible things. Kristina Helfer is one such volunteer. But right now she sees something so inspiring and life-affirming, it’s almost unbelievable.
One of the saddest parts of Helfer’s job is helping pups who never get adopted.
She does everything she can for these dogs. She’s even adopted a few of them herself.
Two such dogs that she’s adopted were Frank and Piper.
When she first found Frank and Piper, they were mangy and starving. But over a few months, Helfer made sure they got better.
During this time, Helfer fell in love with these two adorable pups. She decided that she had to have them in her life.
But her adoptions didn’t stop there.
Her shelter, Wise Animal Rescue, had taken in another dog. This pup was very different than Frank and Piper. He was a tiny chihuahua named Tito.
Tito was 16 years old when he arrived at the shelter. And the dog was experiencing some severe medical conditions.
He had a collapsed trachea and an infected mass. The little guy was barely breathing!
As you can only imagine, no one who came to the shelter wanted the responsibility of caring for a very old chihuahua with medical issues.
But Helfer could not stand to see Tito suffer from loneliness on top of his health problems.
So She decided to take Tito home to care for him herself. She took charge of administering Tito’s medicine and hoped the dog would get better.
However, Helfer was worried about how her two large pit bulls would react to this new, older dog. Would they be aggressive toward him? Fortunately, it turned out that her dogs not only accepted Tito but loved him right away!
Piper at first seemed indifferent to the new arrival, but Frank was a different story. He did something Helfer had never seen a dog do so quickly.
Frank trotted over to Tito, sniffed around, and started licking him. The two immediately developed a strong bond.
And from that moment on, Tito and Frank have been the best of friends.
Eventually, Tito had to have another surgery to remove the mass on his back. After the operation, Frank refused to leave his friend’s side. He knew that to get better, Tito would need his best friend.
Tito started regaining his health reasonably quickly, thanks to Helfer’s support and Frank’s love.
Not only was Tito getting better, but Helfer noticed Frank was also feeling happier day by day. Frank used to be an anxious pup, but with Tito around, he was always calm.
However, after the operation, Tito could barely walk anymore.
That’s when Helfer found something that would allow the two to travel together. Now Frank carries his friend around every day.
Frank, Tito, Piper, and Helfer are an unlikely team. But now that they’ve found each other life is good!
Please share this beautiful story with your friends and family.
