Many human beings are downright evil and others are simply stupid. Why would someone destroy baby swans? It’s unimaginable. However, that’s exactly what happened in Manchester park. A swan laid six eggs at the park and after teenagers thoughtlessly destroyed her eggs with bricks, the mother’s mate ran away and she died of a broken heart. The tragic story came to light when a wildlife enthusiast who was watching the swan wrote about the tragedy in a Facebook group. The man who was monitoring the swan is Michael James Mason, and he wrote the update in the group on June 18th.
In his post, he said, “I really don’t want to do this post today because it comes with great sadness.” He explained that he’s tried to keep everyone updated on the swan because everyone was so interested in what was going on with her. However, after she laid six eggs, three of the eggs were destroyed by “youths,” and she was further harassed by dogs who jumped in. Also, she was further harassed by a duck and a moorhen, and two more eggs were lost. Only one egg was remaining when her mate abandoned her. When Michael went to check on her that morning, she was “found slumped in her nest dead.”
Naturally, members of the group were outraged, and who wouldn’t be. Michael himself said, “Just feel like crying as I have followed her progress for about 12 weeks.” The Manchester Evening News reported that the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was carrying out an investigation into the incident to try to see what exactly happened. “This is a really sad development and it is very upsetting to hear about the death of this poor swan,” the statement read. Swans, along with their eggs and nests, are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981. Swans mate for life, and when her mate was driven away by stress, it was just more than she could handle.
