When you have a pool in your backyard, you get used to people coming by to take a dip when the weather is hot. That is especially true when we have young children but even if you don’t have kids, you won’t have to look far to find someone who is looking for a nice swim. Perhaps that was a common occurrence with the Basso family as well. They have a nice pool and their kids enjoy it regularly but on this day, they had some guests that they didn’t expect.
This happened on one summer afternoon when the family was all inside. They were probably planning their day, thinking about taking a nice swim in the pool but when they looked outside, they had the surprise of their life. They could see the above-ground pool that was waiting for them but they weren’t expecting to see another family swimming away happily. In fact, that family didn’t seem to have any problem with their unexpected visit but the Basso family quickly picked up the phone and hit ‘record’.
What they saw in the backyard was a mother bear and her 5 young cubs, gleefully splashing away in their pool. It seems that the opportunity presented itself on that hot day in Rockaway Township, NJ and it was just too much for them to ignore.
As the Bassos watched from the safety of their home, the bears played with the pool toys, on the swing set and ran around the yard like they owned the place. Perhaps unexpected guests aren’t so bad after all.

They watch as the bear family plays with the inflatables. There is nothing that any of them can do but sit back and watch. Mom is taping the whole thing but the kids and dad have other ideas.
“Noooooo!” the daughter cries. “Now there’s going to be hair everywhere in the pool.”
Dad is not quite as happy as the mom and is thinking about the damage they will cause. “They’re gonna be poking holes with their feet in the floor,” he says. To that, little Sophie starts crying because she thinks her swimming days are over for the rest of the summer. Possibly forever. “I wish the bears were in someone else’s yard, not ours,” she pouts.
When mamma bear starts climbing over the sides, it looks like there could be some problems. There just is so much for that furry family to explore. Even the slide and swings need to be tested.
So much is taking place at this point it is difficult to follow it all. They are splashing, playing with the hose and popping beach balls. When all is said and done, the inflatables are toast.
Finally, the momma bear goes too far and grabs the water pump. That is when the mom inside finally shrieks.
