German shepherds are often given a reputation for being tough, no-nonsense dogs. While there are many trained dogs that can come off as a bit unfriendly, the truth is that German shepherds are among some of the most playful and friendly breeds you’ll find. These pups are often obedient, alert, loyal, courageous, watchful, confident, curious, and very intelligent. In fact, sometimes they are even described as being a bit aloof and very vocal. They are highly sensitive and doesn’t like being alone for too long. These pups are rated by Dog Time as being highly family and kid-friendly, but may not get on well with other dogs.
Now, this is the story of Kai, a dog born as a German shepherd, but soon started to identify as a bird! You see, Kai always loved playing in his parent’s yard since he was a puppy, and he was instantly drawn to the birdbath. In fact, the pup is known to take cool sips and even baths in it on those hot summer days. Initially, Kai would get on his hind legs and sip the water. But after observing how his fellow birds would use it to cool down, he decided that he would give it a shot as well. So he began climbing onto the birdbath and bathing!
“We had a pool in the backyard, but he would always go to the birdbath to get a drink because it was closer,” Ashley Shell, Kai’s mom, told The Dodo.
She started to notice how much her pup loved their birdbath and began recording whenever Kai would take one of his adorable doggy birdbaths.
“I started recording him because he started jumping into it to get a drink and I was impressed by the balance,” Shell said. “This video was the first time he actually jumped up and lay down in it.”

After pacing around the wobbling bowl, Kai began to get his balance and settle in, seeming right at home. After that, he could drink and bath at the same time until his heart’s content. And he did so for about ten minutes.
“He’s very intelligent, always figuring stuff out,” Shell said. “But he also has a silly side and loves to play.”

Unfortunately, Kai had now outgrown the birdbath and didn’t fit in it the same way he did when he was just a puppy. Nevertheless, he still loves climbing up and cooling down whenever he has the chance. Watch his adorable video below.
