In today’s world, you really need to be cautious when it comes to what you say and do. There are times when it could offend someone and if you aren’t careful, you could pay a heavy price.
It seems that Tom Hanks is the latest victim of this world’s cancel culture after he performed on SNL for their 50th anniversary. It was a surprise appearance of a character from years ago and people were not happy.
In fact, during that one skit where Tom Hanks played ‘Doug’ on Black Jeopardy, he managed to insult some 77 million people. Many took to social media and were even calling his performance ‘disgusting’.
When Hanks was interviewed about his experience on SNL, he called it the ‘single most exciting thing that has happened in my career’. That is high praise from someone who has done so many amazing things in his lifetime.
He first hosted the show in 1985 and has been back another 10 times as the host. Not many people can say that they have hosted SNL that many times.
When Hanks played a Trump supporter named Doug, it seemed to be in good fun but many took offense at it. This created quite a stir, but not everyone agreed with the hype.
This includes Joy Behar from The View. She said: “The fact remains that they’re making anyone who voted for Trump look like a racist, and that’s why they’re mad.”
“I personally would never do that, because I don’t believe that any group is one thing.
“A lot of these people [who voted for Trump], in my opinion, have been misled. They thought that grocery prices would come down. They’re up. They thought inflation was coming down. It’s up. They thought that Medicaid was safe. It’s not. They thought Social Security was safe. It’s not.
“So it’s not only racism that caused Trump to be in office. We have to remember that. So of course they’re going to be insulted.”
Someone who was upset with his performance was Victoria Jackson, a former SNL cast member. She said that she was disappointed in what he did.
Link Lauren, a political commentator was on X to give some comments and was critical of the performance. She wrote:
“Tom Hanks just came out on ‘SNL’ in a MAGA hat for a bit. This show wonders why their ratings are in the gutter. Trump won the popular vote. This tired trope that MAGA is racist is disgusting. ‘SNL’ is an unfunny show for snobbish liberal elites.”
That isn’t to mention the many others who commented negatively on the sketch. Others, however, were happy with the sketch and found humor in what was being said.
