If there’s one thing we know about politics in the United States, it’s the fact that people are going to argue about it. Some are going to be on one side or the other and at times, the debates can get heated.
This was seen when Tom Hanks was on Saturday Night Live for a skit that was featured on the 50th anniversary special of the show. He played a Donald Trump supporter, and people were very upset.
New York was the scene where many celebrities came together on Sunday, February 16. It was a huge milestone of 50 years for Saturday Night Live and many wanted to celebrate.
Some of the people who showed up for the show included Martin Short, Meryl Streep, and Jack Nicholson. There were probably more a-listers at the show for Saturday Night Live than there were on the red carpet at an awards show.
Tom Hanks was also somebody who came for the celebration and there was some controversy surrounding the skit they showed. He played a supporter of Pres. Trump, wearing a red ‘Make America Great Again’ hat. His name was Doug and he was playing on a parity game show, ‘Black Jeopardy’
Keenan Thompson played the host of the parody show during the skit and at first, he tried to shake Doug’s hand but Doug refused. Eventually, he did shake his hand, with the host saying: “Don’t like that, whoa, whoa, whoa. Maybe I’ll start a show for you to come on and we’ll call it White Jeopardy.”
Many supporters of Donald Trump were quick to jump on Twitter after the skit was on TV. They were not very impressed, saying that dressing up Tom Hanks like a slob to mock Trump supporters and showing them as all racist, dumb, rednecks was no good.
Even Link Lauren, a former advisor to Robert F Kennedy jumped in on the discussion. “Tom Hanks just came out on SNL in a MAGA hat for a bit where he acted like he didn’t want to shake a black man’s hand.
“This show wonders why their ratings are in the gutter. Trump won the popular vote. This tired trope that MAGA is racist is disgusting. SNL is an unfunny show for snobbish liberal elites. The current Republican Party is a big tent coalition compromised of many former Democrats. Good riddance, SNL!”
As you can tell, not many people had anything good to say about Tom Hanks appearance. Was it funny? Humor is really in the eye of the beholder but according to many Trump supporters, this did not qualify as being funny.
