Sometimes an actor will rise to superstardom before you know it and then suddenly, they are gone. That is how many people see the career of Phoebe Cates, but there is much more to it.
Phoebe Cates was in the 1982 film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. She was known for her role in the movie, because she is the one that was topless by the swimming pool.
That scene was not only the most memorable bikini drop in cinema history, as Rolling Stone put it, it is rumored to be one of the most paused parts of any movie of its time.
As it turns out, Phoebe was born to be an actress, because her family has a lot of filmmakers and actresses in them. She said at one time: “In this industry, a woman must be willing to strip in order to succeed. Why not show off your good figure if you have one?”
Aside from being one of the most recognizable individuals from that movie, she now has quite a different job. She runs a little business, working from 9 to 5 selling clothes, perfumes, and presents.
When Phoebe was younger, she loved dancing and she was a model, but she decided to take up acting. She had appeared in a number of periodicals targeted at teenagers and became a sensation.
She was on the cover of Seventeen Magazine four times and eventually, she thought that it would be good to get into acting. Speaking of her modeling career, she said: “It was always the exact same thing. I started doing it just for the money after a time.”
Phoebe was at a party at Studio 54 in New York when she met her agent. Later, she would get acting instructions from Robert Raven.
She said: “I simply understood that I did not want to attend college. And that if I could acquire a few movies or anything, that would be a terrific way to get out of college.”
She first starred in the movie, Paradise as Sarah, and that was in 1982. Other movies she starred included Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Experienced.
When Fast Times was released, it featured a number of actors who were well-known, including Sean Penn and Forest Whitaker. She was surprised when it was as popular as it was.
She continued in her acting career for a while but eventually, she and her husband, Kevin Klein, decided to raise a family. They made the decision to exchange performing engagements so that the children would always have a parent with them.
Along with Klein, Phoebe has enjoyed a happy marriage for over 30 years. When they were asked what the secret was to their lasting marriage, he said that it all comes down to taking care of it.
These days, Phoebe Cates runs a business. They live in the upper east side of Manhattan at 1283 Madison Avenue, and that is where you will find her boutique, Blue Tree.
