There were a number of surprises that came about as the 58th annual CMA awards took place. It happened on November 20 in Nashville, Tennessee.
One of the things that may not have been very surprising to some was when Megan Maroney was given the title of New Artist of the Year. She had actually been nominated for three different categories but secured the New Artist of the Year as her own.
She also had the opportunity to perform a live song for those in attendance. She chose the anthem title track from her latest album, ‘Am I Okay?’ She put her heart and soul into the song, and when people started commenting on social media, the reaction was mixed.
The official Instagram page posted about her victory, saying: “I think we’re really happy, and I think that we are better than okay. @MegMoroney is the #CMAawards New Artist of the Year đź’™.”
Many were also celebrating with her, including somebody who posted a clip from the performance and said: “OH MY GOD, WE ARE NOT OKAY! @MegMoroney has all of us dancing around right now after that performance on the #CMAawards stage đź’™.”
When the singer and songwriter went out on the stage, she was looking country in her white cowboy boots and a shimmering mini gown.
As she performed, it was obvious that she was worthy of the title but many on social media had their doubts and in true social media fashion, they voicee them without hesitating.
One of the users spoke about how she always sounds bad when she sings live. They said that they really like her but she doesn’t have any range. Another simply said “Love her but I was disappointed.”
Some thought that perhaps she was sick and said that they had seen her performing live in person and thought it was so much better. Others simply refer to it as being atrocious.
The critique that was not so friendly continued, with somebody saying: “That was a terrible performance and her voice was so mediocre! I can’t believe this is the best new artist!”
Another said: “She’s a good [songwriter], but her performance was underwhelming.”
There was also the thought that perhaps she was sick or maybe her nerves had gotten to her so she sounded a little ‘off’.
Despite the fact that many criticized her performance, other people attacked her standing after she won the Artist of the Year award. They said it was ’embarrassing for her.’
There were some who even said that she won because she was pretty and not because she could sing.
Of course, there were also some who fell all over themselves to say how much they loved the performance.
I guess you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
