Whoopi Goldberg has certainly seen her fair share of controversy and the show that she is on, The View, is based on controversy in many ways. Recently, things took a new turn when she tried to buy some food.
According to Whoopi Goldberg, the New York bakery would not serve her an order because of her politics. The bakery has denied the charges, and they claim that due to her negative publicity, they have received an influx of orders.
It started when Goldberg talked about it on The View. She had ordered a batch of Charlotte russe from a family-owned bakery in New York City.
She said: “Now, I should tell you, charlotte russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me.” The audience was shocked, and then she suggested that they may not have liked her politics.
She went on to say: “They said that their ovens had gone down, all kinds of stuff, but folks went and got them anyway, which is why I’m not telling you who made them.” She then outed the business by name, Holtermann’s Bakery in Staten Island.
Jill Holtermann, the owner of the bakery denied that she had turned Goldberg away for political reasons. She said that she was actually having boiler issues so she couldn’t allow her to order the cakes.
Goldberg came back to restate her claim in an Instagram video, saying that it was ‘a little odd’ that they could not do her birthday order but they were “able to accept an order of a different 48 of the same dessert when somebody else called without using my name.”
On Friday, the borough president in Staten Island stood with other local officials in front of the bakery, saying: “We’re here today to support them, to say that Staten Island stands with them, and I venture to guess that people across this country knew what the Holtermann family was all about.
“And the way we can make this better, and the woman I’m talking to, I won’t mention her name, just say you’re sorry so we can put this behind us.”
He then asked Whoppi to apologize.
Holtermann was also there for the news conference and said that she has received overwhelming support after the incident. They had shared a social media statement, saying that the phones were ‘ringing off the hook.’
In another post, they wrote: “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all the incredible support we’ve received from near and far! For the second day in a row, we’ve emptied out the shop, and it’s all thanks to YOU! Your love and loyalty keep us going!”
I guess it’s true what they say, no publicity is bad publicity.
