Many of us who remember the sitcom Full House remember Uncle Joey. He was an important part of the family and the show, but life hasn’t always been easy for him.
Recently, Dave Coulier, who played the part of Uncle Joey has opened up about his life. He is ready to be a grandfather and he is also dealing with a diagnosis of cancer.
Now that the 65-year-old actor is facing a serious health issue, he is trying his best to face it head-on. He has a lot to fight for, as he is also looking forward to being a grandfather.
There are a lot of challenges associated with dealing with such a large health problem. Dave spoke about it, as well as a passion that he has enjoyed for many years, aviation.
Dave loved flying, even before he was the actor that is known today. He spoke about this in a 2012 interview, saying:
“My dad had a friend who flew a Cessna 180 at a small uncontrolled field near our home in St. Clair Shores, Mich. When I was just five years old, my father took me along. That first flight on a cold winter day got me hooked on aviation for a lifetime.”
He loved flying so much that he got his pilot’s license when he was only a teenager. He gave his father the credit for making it possible.
He said: “When I was a kid, he would take me flying and to air shows, and buy me model airplanes to build. So when I was 17 I’d saved enough money to start flight training.”
Eventually, his love of flying would even extend to his acting and the ability to be onset. One day, he flew from Santa Monica to Burbank for a day on the Full House set to skip the busy traffic. He said that it only took him 12 minutes, but the studio was not happy so it was the last time he did it.
Dave is best known for his role as Joey Gladstone. He played on Full House from 1987 until 1995. He would admit that the popularity of the show continues to grow and that he never wanted to get away from it.
He said: “I’ve never wanted to get away from ‘Full House.’ I adore the show.” This affection brought him back as Uncle Joey in the reboot “Fuller House.”
Many of the people that he started on the show with became lifelong friends. This included Bob Saget and John Stamos, who were there when he got married in 2014.
It was a small and intimate ceremony and he said that it only lasted about six minutes. He wanted to spend more time with family and friends, so we kept the ceremony short.
His wife, Melissa, shares moments on social media and has many followers.
His son also shares pictures on social media, including one with his famous dad and they were both wearing suits. His son is now expecting their first child with his wife and the baby is due in March 2025.
Unfortunately, Dave also shared some tragic news on the Today show. He has recently been diagnosed with stage III non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. That is a blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system.
He recognizes that he was sick when he had a large lump in his groin area that appeared after a cold. After testing, and some initial results that looked normal, a biopsy confirmed that he had B-cell lymphoma. He was in shock at the news.
Despite the difficulties that he faces, he is maintaining an optimistic outlook. He is focusing on strength and resilience so that he can be there to see the birth of his grandchild.
