Singer Wants People To Know Her Music Isn’t Made For ‘A White Audience’

A singer is more than somebody who just entertains others with their music. They are an artist, and as such, they may focus on a specific audience.

Lizzo also is an artist with her music and the 34-year-old musician focuses on her experience as a black individual. In fact, she spoke with Vanity Fair and said that she doesn’t focus on making music for a ‘white audience.’

When you listen to her tunes, you can hear a lot of different types of music coming from them. You might pick up some R&B, hip-hop, gospel, and almost anything in between.

Some of her songs have done very well and have skyrocketed to the top of the charts very quickly. As a result, many white people were fond of her music, but she says that is what ‘disturbs her the most.’

“This is probably the biggest criticism I’ve received, and it is such a critical conversation when it comes to black artists,” she said. “When black people see a lot of white people in the audience, they think, ‘Well, this isn’t for me. This is for them.’ The thing is, when a black artist reaches a certain level of popularity, it’s going to be a predominantly white crowd.

“I am not making music for white people. I am a black woman. I am making music from my black experience.”

Lizzo is known for creating some chart-topping hits, but she is actually creating the music ‘to heal myself (from) the experience we call life.”

The singer, who hails from Detroit, wants to focus on young black people and she is trying to do something for them. She would like to see more love and self-love in the world, saying that we need those ‘self-love albums more than anybody’

She went on to say: “So am I making music for that girl right there who looks like me, who grew up in a city where she was underappreciated and picked on and made to feel unbeautiful.” She then answered her own question with a resounding “Yes.”

As far as people saying that she is a racist, she also has some words for them. She said: “It blows my mind when people say I’m not making music from a black perspective—how could I not do that as a black artist?”

On the other hand, 45-year-old Kanye West was very public with his comments about her weight. He said: “When Lizzo loses 10 pounds and announces it, the bots — that’s a term for like telemarketer callers on Instagram — they attack her for losing weight because the media wants to put out a perception that being overweight is the new goal when it’s actually unhealthy.

“Let’s get aside the fact of whether it’s fashion and vogue, which it’s not. Or if someone thinks she is attractive, to each his own. It’s actually clinically unhealthy, and for people to promote that… it’s demonic.”

When he was asked about his thoughts of what was happening to the black race, he said: “It’s a genocide of the black race. They want to kill us in any way they can.”
