We live in a world where things are constantly changing and this includes issues regarding gender. It seems as if you have to be cautious about anything you say or do, or it could come back to haunt you with negative feedback.
When you look at the world around us, however, you can’t help but notice that there is a lot of gender stereotypes that exist. This also includes in the medical industry, as for many years, nurses were always considered to be women and men would be the doctors.
These days, there are plenty of men who make great nurses and female doctors are plentiful. That being said, there are still some gender roles associated with those jobs, and not everybody is happy about it.
When a photo was posted online, it went viral, and not for the reason that the OP was probably thinking. I’m sure that they were very happy with the adorable children, but people started complaining immediately.
In the picture, you can see a young boy and girl holding hands and walking down the hallway at the hospital. The little girl was wearing pink scrubs that said ‘Nurse in Training’ and the little boy has green scrubs that read, ‘Doctor in Training.’
It was posted on X by Medical Shots, an account with almost 240,000 followers. They will regularly share content associated with health, and I’m sure they were looking for a nice reaction.
The post said: “This is cute, isn’t it?”
Very few people agreed that it was cute. In fact, many found it offensive and thought that it was wrong to post. They felt that it was offensive to both men and women.
Undoubtedly, there is a lot of work associated with being a nurse and it is not a lower position compared to a doctor. It also isn’t a job that can only be done by one gender.
Some also said that it was more than a simple photo that was associated with the stereotype. They said that there was even a deeper meeting, and that pink does not always mean ‘girl’.
Aside from complaints, most people just agreed that it was a cringe-worthy photo. What do you think?
