What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about Snoop Dogg? If you are like most people, you think about his rapping career but that isn’t all that there is to the entertainer.
Snoop Dogg, who was born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. is well known for his music career. He is also known as a family man to those who love him the most. This includes being a grandfather to seven grandchildren.
Ever since 1997, Snoop Dogg has been married to Shante Broadus. He has four children from a previous relationship, Corde, 30; Cordell, 27; Cori, 25; and Julian, 26.
Like many families, his family has grown over the years and now he is a grandfather. He loves all of his grandchildren but there is one in particular that he has a very special place in his heart for. It was his grandson who passed away.
He said: “I got kids, and I always play my music for them. I like to hear what they like. They think I’m old, but I think I’m young.”
He went on to say: “Ninety percent of rappers grew up without fathers, but you see ninety percent of those rappers becoming fathers to their kids. We don’t ever get commended for that. We become real men when we get to this level we’re at right now.”
Now that season 26 of The Voice is out, he is busy as one of the coaches. That still doesn’t stop him from being a good parent to his children and a grandparent to his grandchildren.
He said: “My relationship with my kids is more important than anything. It’s a friendship relationship … it’s based on me being a father, a mentor and a friend.”
You are probably wondering what type of grandfather Snoop is. He describes himself as being a ‘gullible, get-away-with-everything kind of grandpa.’
In an interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show in January 2024, he said that his grandchildren call him ‘Papa Snoop’ but that name originally came from his oldest grandson.
He said: “[My grandkids are] different ages, ranges, [and] sizes and I love them all the same way. Actually, my oldest [grandson’s] birthday is today so I’m on my way to his birthday party when I leave here.”
He also said that his grandson originally called him ‘Papa Noop’ because he couldn’t say Snoop properly. Eventually, he got it right.
One of the low points in Snoop Dogg’s life happened in September 2019. His grandson, Kai Love was only 10 days old and he passed away. Snoop went on social media to pay tribute, saying: “If you’re facing something you don’t understand: Choose to trust God. Remember all He has done for you. His ways are higher than ours. He is always good.”
Many people came on to comment with their condolences and to express their sorrow for his loss.
Kai’s parents also felt the loss considerably and were heartbroken. They shared a tribute on Instagram on what would have been the young boy’s fourth birthday, expressing their grief and doing something good on that day for others.
The post said: “Happy heavenly birthday to my 1st son Kai Love who passed away 9-15-2019.” They spoke about how Kai died from a congenital heart defect. They added: “I know God used this painful time in our families life, knowing I will use that to help those in need of that knowledge of GOD and SELF [sic].”
The mother went on to explain: “The pain of losing a child you created in YOUR body is very traumatic feeling that never goes away…since that moment God has guided my steps and shown me a deeper soul purpose…to get close to God, improve your heart health through lifestyle choices, relationship standards, family dynamic, generational curse breaking; food choices, self-love, serving those in need of help mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally [sic].”
As you can tell, Snoop Dogg has had his ups and downs in life. We appreciate the fact that he is such a devoted father and grandfather and wish him the very best in life.
