When most people argue over who was the best James Bond, you often hear names like Sean Connery, Roger More, David Niven, Pierce Brosnan, and David Niven tossed about, but in truth, most of these fine actors would have had a tough time topping the legendary Tim Conway’s portrayal had he ever played 007. Thankfully, he did play a version of the iconic secret agent in Season 5, episode 21 of The Carol Burnett Show.
Since 1962, only seven talented actors got to portray a man of mystery. However, none of them could touch Conway’s James Blond performance.
Lyle Waggoner introduced the sketch as an episode of “Midnight Theater.” He described it as an “exciting, super spy adventure” featuring James Blond, complete with brutality, nudity, sex, violence, and double-crossing. He jokes that there’s something for the entire family.
The Skit starts in a glamour gold gilt room occupied by a beautiful woman in a jumpsuit. The woman is played by pop singer Eydie Gorme, who guest stars in the episode. She, along with another beauty, fawn, and fight over the debonair James Blond, but he pauses kisses to kill two assassins with a weaponized lamp and telephone.
The pure silliness of the scene as Conway plays the whole thing as calmly as can make this Skit an instant classic!
Blond’s contact enters to debrief him on his latest case. An “evil mastermind” is terrorizing the globe, threatening to bomb significant cities if he doesn’t get 3 million dollars.
He goes by the name Dr. Nose, and it’s clear he’s a cartoon version of Dr. Julius No, a major villain in the James Bond universe. The writing in this sketch is spot on!
Soon James is visited by Dr. Nose’s right-hand woman, Passion Plenty, played by Carol Burnett (James Bond fans can guess who they are referencing, but I can’t say it).
The two spies spar, ending in James Blond kissing her into submission.
The Skit ends with a dramatic final battle between James Blond and Dr. Nose in the villain’s secret headquarters.
