Emma Chambers brought joy and laughter to the homes of millions when she brought the role of Alice Springs Tinker Horton to life on the legendary sitcom The Vicar of Dibley. The formula for most successful sitcoms usually has one screwball/silly/award/not-so-bright type character the main character (who typically plays the “straight man”) can playoff for big laughs.[1]
This is true for such classics as The Honeymooners, with Art Carney playing Ed Norton, Ralph Kramden’s neighbor, and best friend. And let’s not forget about The Golden Girls with the legendary Betty White playing the role of Rose Nylund. Alice Tinker’s character type followed in a long line of great characters who filled similar roles.
It’s hard to imagine those shows without those off-the-wall silly characters, so The Vicar of Dibley wouldn’t have been the same without Alice Tinker.
The character Alice taught art at Dibley’s local nursery school. She’s also the town’s verger who learned her role under Reverend Pottle until his death in 1994. Alice was then pretty bewildered when the town’s new Vicar came along.
At first, Vicar Geraldine Granger wasn’t very keen on Alice and wasn’t sure if she was the right fit for the role.
But, as time went on, she and Alice developed a special friendship that’s right up there with some of the funniest sitcom friendships in TV history.
Watching Geraldine and Alice is truly a treat as these two ladies have the chemistry, comedic timing, and execution down to a science.
Below we have a hilarious video featuring three of Alice Tinker’s funniest scenes with Geraldine, including a clip of her wedding! Enjoy.
