It’s famously difficult to take photos of wildlife. In fact, it’s so challenging and the results are sometimes so comical that there is a special Facebook group dedicated to bad wildlife photography. Fortunately, these folks who spend their days trying to photograph these beautiful animals are well accustomed to having to be very patient to try to get the perfect shot. Especially when you’re trying to photograph an animal that is flighty like a deer, it can be super challenging to get that perfect shot. In fact, many wildlife photographers leave their cameras or video cameras out to try to capture shots when they’re not around.
In a moment that has captured the attention of the world, wildlife photographer Roger Clark got the perfect image of a magnificent stag but he wasn’t aiming his camera at the animal. Rather, the animal, which was a deer with huge antlers, sneaked up behind the photographer and he never knew it while he was standing there. There was a thick carpet of ferns on the ground and the deer just ambled up behind Clark, probably being very curious as these animals tend to be. Meanwhile, Clark had his camera facing the entirely wrong way. He seemed to be completely oblivious to the animal behind him.
The photo was taken in West London, in Busy Park. Although Clark missed the “money shot,” the one that someone ended up capturing has gone more viral than it would have if Clark had been aiming in the correct direction. Roger had been on the lookout for red deer so he could photograph them, but he never expected this to happen. He explained that they had not covered the breeding season for the red deer yet this year, but with rutting still going on, they thought they would give it a try.
They captured the photo of a lifetime.
