Lieutenant Brian Zach, a Kingman Police Department officer, was just responding to a routine call in March of 2018, and he had no idea that his life was about to be changed forever. What ended up happening was the man was about to meet his future daughter and he didn’t realize it. At the time, Zach was a patrol sergeant and he didn’t realize that when the officers working under him were responding to a routine residence check that a little girl was in dire need of some help from someone like him. The little girl’s name is Kaila and Zach said when he got there, he sat down with her and colored as they shared a snack.
In an interview that he did with Good Morning America, Zach said that Kaila held his hand as if she was trying to comfort him, rather than she herself needing some comfort and protection. He describes her as a “cute little thing.” When the detectives arrived at Kaila’s home, they took her to the hospital, Zach said. When he got home that night, he told his wife, Cierra, that he had met the “cutest little girl.” Cierra and Zach have two children of their own, and this sweet little girl made a huge impression on the officer. Zach said that he just fell in love with this little girl and said she was “awesome.”

At the hospital, Kaila had to be treated for injuries and the people who were caring for her faced criminal charges. When the time came to place Kaila in a new home, Zach and Cierra knew exactly what they were meant to do. First, they offered to foster Kaila as part of the adoption process. When she arrived at her home, the little girl had a bag of clothing that didn’t even fit her and one sippy cup. Nothing else. But she adapted very quickly to her new home and family and even started calling Cierra “Mom” from nearly day one. It took her a few more days to start calling Zach “Dad,” but it finally happened.

The time she spent fostering with the Zach family was precious to them all, and they never knew if she would be going back to her first family. In the end, they were able to adopt Kaila 30 months after the first time they met her. Watch the video below for more on this wonderful story.
