If you’re a Shonda Rhimes fan, you already know all about her award-winning series of TV shows that include hits like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “How to Get Away With Murder,” and “Scandal.” Well, as it turns out, the talented lady is also pretty awesome at pulling together sumptuous period pieces that are set in 19th century England. Although it doesn’t sound like one of her projects, it is indeed. Clearly, this woman can do anything. When she partnered with Netflix, she created a period drama called “Bridgerton” and it’s getting great reviews, not just for the acting and set, but also the gorgeous costumes.
The show is based on a series of books by award-winning romance author Julia Quinn. The plot centers around a family named Bridgerton, which is a widowed mother and her eight kids. Billed as a candy-colored period piece, the difference comes from the two women behind the scenes. Shonda Rhimes, first of all, but there’s another lady who makes sure things never get boring. A New York native named Ellen Mirojnick is the 71-year-old costume designer behind this epic series. Mirojnick has designed wardrobe in the past for shows like “Basic Instinct,” “Wall Street,” and more, but Bridgerton is going to be her opus.
Mirojnick has won an Emmy for her costume designs when she worked on the Liberace biopic by Steven Soderbergh called “Behind the Candelabra.” She was also instrumental in the costumes for “Maleficient: Mistress of Evil” and the hit Broadway show turned movie, “The Greatest Showman.” With Bridgerton, she has totally outdone herself and created a world of Regency-era silhouettes that has elements that make it fresh and fantastical. The diverse cast in the show swirls through beautiful and luxurious ballroom sequences in candy-colored dresses, dramatic cloaks, and amazing jewelry.
