There are many reasons why we might appreciate a good riddle. In part, it is because we have a natural curiosity and want to do what we can to solve any puzzle that comes our way. Another reason is that it tends to make us focus and when we are able to solve it, the solution makes us feel a little better about ourselves. It turns out that there is another reason why puzzles are so awesome and that is because they can train our minds and help to build up our skills that we need from day to day.
If there is one thing that the world around us throws in our direction, it is distractions. They come in almost every shape and form you can imagine and there are going to be times when we are so absorbed in them that we miss out on what is going on right in front of us. This riddle is designed to help you focus on things and to take your mind off of the issues you may be facing. It may look simple on the surface but the solution is not as easy to find as you think.
Give yourself time to work through the puzzle and see what you come up with. It’s a fairly straightforward question. A man buys a horse for $50 and sells it for $60. The next day he buys it for $70 and sells it again for $80. Did he make or lose money or did he just break even?
Having trouble? Let’s work on it together.
The man makes a $10 profit on the first sale and then buys it again for $70, meaning he is out $60.
When he sells the horse for $80, he makes another $10 profit.
So, he made a $10 profit on each of two different sales. What is the solution?
The man made $20 total!
