When you’re a firefighter or other first responder, you’re trained to put the safety of other people over your own. These courageous people don’t clock in and out and leave their work behind like most of us do. They’re trained heroes, and time and again, we’ve seen them jump to duty even if they’re off the clock. Every day, these brave individuals face dangerous hazards like floods and fire and all the while,k provide life-saving treatment to people in need. This isn’t just in the U.S., of course. The heroism of these people who choose this profession is universal and we see their acts of heroism all over the world.
A man in Katlehong, South Africa named Prince Xwide Masuku knows what it means to do the kind of work he does. Masuku is a firefighter and paramedic who works for the EMS for the city of Johannesburg. Recently, the 32-year-old Masuku became a hero in a whole new way and a family of three is alive to tell the tale of his heroism. Masuku had just finished his night shift on November 1st when he suddenly noticed the car in front of him swerving on the road. It had been raining hard all weekend, and the roads were flooded with water. Before he knew what was happening, the driver of the car lost control.

The vehicle started hydroplaning on the road and flew into a flooded area off of the road. As onlookers watched in horror, some of them even started recording the scene on their phones. Meanwhile, the car started to sink into the water. There was no one around to help except Masuku, but he was all the man that was needed apparently. No one else moved to help, but Masuku didn’t hesitate for even a moment before jumping into the water. Minutes later, he was dragging each person out, one at a time, starting with the little girl, then her brother, and last, the children’s mother.

By that time, other people had started to help the man bring the family back to dry land. Within minutes, the emergency services team was on the scene to treat any injuries. The mom and the little boy had some neck pain, but otherwise, they were all just fine thanks to the fast-thinking Masuku. And like these heroes always do, Masuku said that he wasn’t a hero and was just doing his job. He explained that it’s his instinct to save people and that instinct just “kicked in.” He reminds us all that he “took an oath” and that includes being off-duty and someone needing your help.

He added that he was very happy that he was in the right place at the right time. Masuku is a proud member of the city’s drill squad and because of his heroism, he was honored with a special salute for his outstanding heroism and service. Watch the tribute show in the video below.
