Beekeeper Explains Exactly the Role Bees Play in Our Groceries

What do you think of bees? As for me, I don’t like getting stung, let’s just put it that way. No one does, and bees will sting if you’re not careful. So I avoid them. However, because of their tendency to inflict pain, bees have been in danger for a long time, and that’s a really bad thing because without bees, we can’t live. They’re essential to the survival of most creatures who live on this planet, in fact. Not just human beings. Besides being killed because they sting, their natural habitats have suffered losses because of human innovation and construction.

Because of this, it has become an urgent issue and it’s up to us to make sure they survive. After all, it’s not like lions and bears are going around destroying bees and the places they live. It’s humans, of course. We’re the ones who do so much damage to the earth and its creatures. It’s been that way for a long time. On top of the other things causing bees to die, pesticides are also killing them. The poor bees can’t win. A Texas beekeeper named Erika is a person who is very focused on making sure bees survive and she’s made it her mission to educate the rest of us on what we can do for bees.

As it turns out, bees pollinate about a third of our food supply, and honeybees are particularly important. In fact, they’re so important that sometimes farmers rent them so that the bees can help with the crops they’re growing to feed us all, Erika says. She adds that without bees, our food would look a lot different than it does not because bees pollinate the plants. If we didn’t have bees, we’d be walking into grocery stores and seeing nothing but canned and preserved foods ready for purchase. In addition to educating people about bees, Erika also works with bees.
