All of the Craziest Eyebrows You Ever Needed, All in One Place

I’ve never put a lot of thought into my eyebrows, to be honest. Occasionally, it occurs to me that I need to “have them done,” and by that, I mean going to a nail salon and letting someone torture me for three minutes with some hot wax that yanks all the hair off. I know that a lot of women spend tons of time and money on their eyebrows, and I’m not sure why I don’t worry about mine. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the era of Brooke Shields unwieldy bushy eyebrows that were just gorgeous. After that, anything seems tame. Now my mom is a different story.

My mom is a natural blonde and her eyebrows barely showed up on her face. Because of this, she used eyebrow pencils to “fill them in.” In fact, she wouldn’t leave the house without penciling in her eyebrows. Once, she was even taken to the hospital to have an emergency hysterectomy and she loves to tell (over and over) the story of how she wouldn’t get into the ambulance before she did her eyebrows. I found that to be very annoying (every time I hear the story) and that may be why I rebelled and just let my eyebrows be natural. My mom’s eyebrow look was sort of like Mia Farrow’s, now that I think about it.

Throughout history, people have put a lot of emphasis on eyebrows and it was one thing a woman could tweak to give herself a unique look. In the 1920s, screen siren and actress Marlene Dietrich made super-think eyebrows that were drawn on all the rage. In the 1930s, Greta Garbo made a slight arch in the eyebrows popular. In the 1940s, Jean Harlow ushered in a severe brow with an unusual downward curve. From natural-looking Grace Kelly to boldly-browed Audrey Hepburn, there’s been a look for every generation.

Below, you’ll see some of the strangest eyebrows ever. Check them out.
