The world that we live in is changing very quickly. It seems as if the nice things in life are disappearing and it doesn’t matter if you’re at home, at work or in any other type of situation, politeness, chivalry and those other factors just seem to be going the way of the dinosaur. As you are about to see, however, there are still some nice things that take place.
This was the final game of the senior year and the pitcher, Jack Pilcher was up against a very difficult situation. With the score at 3-2, he managed to sizzle in a fastball right past the batter and catch him offguard. They won the championship right then and there.
Of course, that didn’t really happen but what did happen changed the way that many people looked at the players on the field that day.
This scene unfolded in 2016. The Zionsville Eagles and Roncalli rebels were in a championship title game. In the ninth inning, the score was tied at two runs each.
The last play of the game came about and Jack Pilcher threw the fastball. Unlike our scenario at the beginning of the game, the batter managed to get a hit and the third baseman collided with another player on the field when trying to catch the ball. The batter made it to first base.
The rebels fans went absolutely crazy in the stands. Players ran across the field, giving high-fives and hugs. When the players were finished celebrating and moving to the dugout, the catcher saw something that made him stop in his tracks.
The pitcher, Jack, was lying facedown on the ground. In his eyes, he just lost the championship title.
He later admitted that you couldn’t feel much worse than he did at that time. If you’ve ever played a team sport, you know how difficult it can be to lose.
“I saw the heartbreak and the distress in all their players, but especially him, just lying almost lifelessly on the mound,” recalled Cody (pictured below).
It just really got to me and I wanted to go over there and tell him everything was going to be alright.
“The way that it ended that way, with that kind of sportsmanship, it just topped off the night, even though we lost,” Jack said.
You can watch the scenario play out in this video. It is quite touching:
